Why you should find the right company first and right job second.
Why you should find the right company first and the right job second.
I can’t stress enough the importance of finding the right company first, and the right job second. If you take the right job at the wrong company, in the long run, the job probably isn’t going to work out for you.
Why?
Think about having your dream role but working in an environment or with people that you dread? Every day will be a struggle and most people eventually fizzle out.
It is important that when you are job searching you look at the big picture. There are effective ways to vet out the right companies from the wrong companies.
- Research: Look at Glassdoor, Comparably, and other career sites to see reviews.
- Question: The interview isn’t just for the company. Ask questions on the company’s mission, goals, aspirations, etc.
- Leadership: You must respect who you work for. Do due diligence on CEO and leadership ratings.
- Evaluate: How is the interview process? Is it long and drawn out with disengaged interviewers or cookie cutter questions? Or, do they take an interest in their process?
- Turnover: Go on LinkedIn and look at how many employees have left over the past year.
- Balance: In the interview ask about work/life balance. Do they provide an environment where they value quality of life over quantity of work?
- Purpose: Is there a company mission? Do they truly want to elevate people?
