5 Tips for a Successful Phone Interview

During the interview process, 99.99% of companies start with a phone interview before meeting you in person. This could be done by the recruiter, human resources, or a member of the team. It’s often the first impression you will make with the organization.

The challenge behind a phone interview is you are unable to see the interviewers’ physical cues or facial expressions, unable to see if they are about to speak or they’d like you to speak, and unable to get a feel of how they are reacting to your comments.

Here are 5 tips to help you navigate a more successful phone interview process.

Write down the interviewer’s name on a post- it note.

I know it seems simple, but just having their first and last name on a bright orange post it note connected to your computer will allow you to easily and seamlessly input their name into the conversation

Prepare a cheat sheet.

Even though you are not in-person, make sure you do your research and due diligence on the interviewer, the company, and the role. Capture important high-level information on a note card to refer to.

Have your resume either printed out or on your computer screen.

The advantage of the interviewer not seeing you is you can easily reference your resume during the call. Highlight key accomplishments as well.

Stand up and dress up.

I know this seems odd. Studies have shown that if you are dressed semi-professionally vs. in your pajamas, you are more focused on the conversation. Also, standing up will ensure you are more attentive vs. casual during the interview.

Prepare some questions to ask.

Interviewers love it when candidates ask questions. It shows they took the time to research and are engaged in the process. Jot down 3-5 questions that are important to you and be sure to ask them when the time is right.
