5 Job Searching Tips in a Down Economy

It is completely understandable to experience a job search of “fear” in a down economy. Scary times call for scary measures. Unfortunately, job searching in desperation mode will often lead to being in the wrong role at the wrong company.

Even when times are challenging it is important to be extremely diligent and focused on how you go about finding your next opportunity. It will pay off in the long run.

1. Focus on growth industries

Even during a recession, certain industries are booming more than others. It is important that you focus on your transferrable skills should you have to switch fields. Transferrable skills are things like Customer Service, Project Management, and Operations. You will want to make sure to generalize your resume a bit more if switching careers.

2. Reach out to Recruitment firms

Recruiters have a strong knowledge base on what’s going on in the market and where the trends are heading. Even if they don’t have something specific for you right now, pick their brains on what they are seeing. I would recommend getting your resume on file with 3-5 different firms.

3. Keep Networking

Tap your LinkedIn network. Ping people you have previously worked with and ask for recommendations or referrals. It’s time to be more proactive than ever, so try to look into people you think can help guide you in the right direction.

4. Consider a Temp Position

I know it’s a bit of an ego blow if you go from a thriving full-time job to a temp role. Who cares! It’s time to get out of your comfort zone. As a recruiter, if I interviewed someone who took a temp role in a down economy to ensure he/she were continuing to progress I would think extremely highly of them. They did what they had to do, are adaptable, and have strong humility.

5. Keep a Positive Attitude

I know it’s tough. There will be many rejections. But just know that all down economies end, and people and companies come out stronger than ever. This too shall pass!
